OpenSMR
OpenSMR Vision
To create a global ecosystem that enables the computing industry to access affordable, clean energy solutions. OpenSMR envisions a future where Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) power data centers, making sustainable energy accessible and economically viable for the entire industry.
OpenSMR Mission
OpenSMR’s mission is to connect SMR technology with the computing sector by providing open-source designs and resources. Our goal is to reduce the total cost of electricity for data centers while promoting the widespread adoption of clean energy solutions.
Key Challenges
Demand for Clean Energy
The computing industry, including major players like Google and Facebook, has shown significant interest in SMR-based energy solutions to power data centers. However, due to high costs, only large corporations currently have access to such sustainable energy sources.
SMR Sector Obstacles
SMR companies face challenges such as high production costs and difficulties in customer acquisition. The niche nature of SMR technology has limited its broader adoption across industries.
OpenSMR’s Solution
Through OpenSMR, we aim to lower costs and broaden access by:
1. Standardizing SMR design and making it open-source.
2. Integrating a global supply chain ecosystem to facilitate scalable, cost-effective production.
3. Addressing the specific needs of high-energy demand industries, including data centers, AI, and Bitcoin mining.
Open SMR Long-Term Goals
1. Meeting Future Energy Needs
The global demand for electricity in the computing industry is expected to grow significantly, with an estimated 400 gigawatts needed over the next decade.
OpenSMR aims to address this by making Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology widely accessible to meet the increasing power requirements sustainably.
2. Next-Generation Data Centers
Our long-term vision includes establishing a new standard for data centers, known as Tier 5/6, which incorporates SMR as a core energy source. This standard will emphasize sustainability, resilience, and cost efficiency, positioning SMR-powered data centers as a solution for future energy challenges.
3. Industry Impact
Through OpenSMR, we seek to influence the computing and energy sectors, encouraging the adoption of clean, sustainable energy sources across high-demand industries. This initiative aims to lower costs, improve energy accessibility, and support environmental goals for generations to come.
